Sticker Inspiration

Here are some ways you can use sticky things in your artwork!

Hang things! via Pinterest

Here, I used washi tape to hang my daughter's artwork!  The mind of a 3 year old...

Hang masking tape from your ceiling.
Ok, that's not really practical, but it sure looks cool in an art installation!

Just go crazy and fill a page with stickers.  Tacky, gaudy, but oh so fun!

Use up stickers on shoebox lids for your wall!

Art Journaling with Kids

Do you have kids of your own or do you work with kids in a classroom/studio setting?  I combined my passions of art journaling and teaching art to kids to create this 34 page E-book about my experiences teaching mixed media/art journaling techniques to my students.

ananya journal copy
For many years I have been really interested in art journaling and I wanted to write some E-books about ways you can incorporate mixed media and art journaling techniques in the classroom. It is a great way for regular classroom teachers to combine creative writing and art.

Painting with watercolors in an art journal
In the art classroom, keeping a sketchbook or art journal is an excellent enrichment activity for early finishers or for kids to do in their free time. I see art journals as a way to combine preliminary sketches for projects, notetaking and creative expression. I have been dabbling in writing articles about mixed media art, watercolor techniques and my own art journal process. I wrote an E-Zine called Art Journaling with Kids that you can purchase for $6.50. You can download a preview and see more images there.

The activities can be used as stand-alone art projects or in an art journal!

Art Journaling with Kids is a downloadable E-Zine with 34 pages of inspiration!

Included are 5 different tutorials and techniques that you can try in blank sketchbooks OR simply as stand-alone art projects.

Art journals allow children to express themselves through drawing, collage and writing. Perfect for independent activities and enrichment.

Contents:

1. What is Art Journaling (including a student handout)
2. Choosing a Journal (advice for the teacher)
3. Tutorial #1: Decorating the Cover (fabric collage, name designs, grid layout)
4. Tutorial #2: Water Sprayed Words
5. Tutorial #3: Masking Tape Journal Spots
6. Tutorial #4: Photocopied Leaves
7. Tutorial #5: Watercolor Shapes
8. Art Journal Printable Activities--- 9 pages of Handouts! This section contains printable student handouts that your kids can cut out and paste in their journal OR use as stand-alone arr activities: question response prompts, art questions, magazine hunt, scavenger hunt, and more!

You can download Art Journaling with Kids E-Zine at TPT or at my Etsy.

Index Cards

The Index Card challenge is winding down and I have several more cards to show you.

Tammy asked us to ponder some questions about ICAD.  Here are some of my answers!

Have you tried new techniques, themes, mediums, materials, palettes, pens?

Yes.  I tried using the Crayola Wild Notes Index Cardswhich were fun, but the colors were not as bright as I expected.  You can see what it looks like in the circles on the last card in this post.  I also used a lot of my homemade stickers!

Do you look forward to your creative time each day?

Of course!  I love creating art and I always look forward to it.

Have you made a little time each day for the past two months for a bit of art?

I have not made art every day.  I would make a bunch of index card artworks in one day.

What was it like to make an extra card?

Well, I usually made 3-5 cards in one sitting, because once I get on a roll with something, I like to keep going.  I will sit down and decide "Ok, today is my day to scrapbook."  or "Today is my day to paint."  and then I will stick with that.  I know the goal of Index Card a Day is to make one every day, but I did not make the index cards in that way.

Are you ready for something fresh and new?

Yes, but I'm not sure what!

Do you love flipping through your cards?

Of course!  I like that the artwork fits in the palm of your hands.

Did this inexpensive, flimsy canvas surprise you?

There is a lot you can do with just a simple index card.  I painted on some to create backgrounds, used oil pastels and lots of collage.

Did you stick to the challenge?

I did not create one every day, but I did make a sizable collection of index cards!

How many cards did you complete?

I think I made 25 cards.  The cards have gotten placed in various sketchbooks, bags and desks, so I need to collect them all again!

Sticky Journals Guest Post: Rachel Mims

Guest Post:  Rachel Mims

I sent out 6 packets of stickers to 6 different artists and throughout the summer I will share with you what they have created.

I have been following Rachel Mims' blog for awhile now and it is so interesting to see what she does in her art therapy classes!

Here is what she wrote at the beginning of June:

"Today is June 1st - the 1st day of ICAD.  Did you make your card?  I made mine:

And then I put it in my art journal.  I started doing that last year - using the cards as part of my art journal pages - and really liked it so I am going to do it again this year.  Here is the page:

Of course, the card and that tab at the bottom (which came off of some junk mail) both open up.  I did some extra writing under the ICAD but not the tab.  Here is a picture of them opened up:

Do you see the stickers that I used?  This art journal page is FULL of them.  There are luggage tags from a trip (or 2?) that I took on American Airlines, a name tag from a dinner I attended, washi tape and stickers from Marcia Beckett.  Marcia is hosting a sticky journal challenge/guest artist challenge! As part of this series on her blog, http://marciabeckett.blogspot.com, she sent me a package of stickers:

That's a lot of stickers, right?  I am really excited about using them!!!  So, that is why I got started right away!!  I got the stickers yesterday, I used them today.  Today I just used the stickers that matched my page... I tend to do that - stay in a color scheme.  Also, for some reason those number stickers really spoke to me.  I already know when I am going to use my other yellow 66 sticker!!"

From Index Card to Journal Page

I made this index card artwork using a variety of object scans, stickers, translucent image and scrapbook paper.  See details about the ICAD project here.

I decided to integrate that index card into an art journal page that I had started.  What do you think?

21 Secrets: Watercolor Playground

I made this artwork a few weeks ago and haven't shared it with you. I made this while taking the 21 Secrets Watercolor Playground workshop with the fabulous Tammy Garcia.

Doodles inside a grid drawn with black marker, then painted with watercolors and white paint pen designs on top.

This artwork was my list of summer things to do.  Here's how we've come along..

  • Movie: Check!  Saw Monsters University.
  • Car & Bike wash:  Not yet
  • Camp fire:  Not yet, but probably when we go to Michigan for our vacation
  • Mini golf:  nope
  • Picnic:  kind of!  Does eating in our driveway count?
  • Icecream on Monona Terrace:  We went there and I ate lunch, no icecream.
  • Walk to the Library:  Check!  Several times.
  • Pick strawberries:  No, we missed that.
  • Zoo:  Check!
  • Paint:  Yes, of course.
  • Mallards baseball game:  Not yet
  • Summer festival:  We stopped by the Fete de Marquette for a short while.
  • Open gym:  Check!  I took Daria to the open gym at a gymnastic place.  She had a blast on the trampoline.
  • Amusement park:  We are planning on going tomorrow.
  • Blooming Butterflies:  Not yet.  That's a butterfly exhibit at our local flower garden.
  • Beach:  Yes, we went with friends one day.
  • Garage sales:  Check!  I am garage saled out.  I don't need any more stuff.

I used mostly Sakura Koi watercolor paints, Caran dAche pastels and Portfolio watersoluble oil pastels.

I hope you all are having a great week!  It has been so nice outside this week and we are starting to get ready for our garage sale.  I am so ready to declutter!

I spent several hours at school yesterday hanging bulletin board displays and unpacking supplies to get ready for the year.  We start school in about a month now!

Stack of Art Journals!

I gathered up all of the art journals and sketchbooks I could find in my house (I'm sure there's more, as they are scattered here and there.)  Some are finished and many are in various stages of completion.  Don't they look yummy all together?

Re-Art Swap

The other weekend I volunteered at one of my favorite events of the year... the Re-Art Swap at Absolutely Art, a local art gallery. You bring in bags of old art supplies that you don't use and can pick from piles of stuff that other people bring in... all for free! It's amazing. Piles and piles of fabric, papers, and STUFF. An art teacher's dream.

Vinyl Stickers Someone brought in about 10 boxes of random vinyl stickers. I couldn't resist! I think I'm going to have some students cut them up and make collages.

Art Supplies Stamps, fabric, oil pastels, Twistables, glitter

Art Supplies yarn, feathers, almost full paint bottles!

This was for me! Fun vintage ephemera for collages. This was for me! Fun vintage ephemera for collages.

A huge pile of rub-on transfer letters.... these are my favorites!!!

Look at this pre-punched decorative paper.. fun fun fun

Yep, I got a lot of really cool supplies.  I did, however, drop off three big bags of old supplies, so it was about an even trade!

Project Life Journaling Cards

I have been creating 3"x4" journal cards digitally for my scrapbook.  I enjoyed making them by digitally combining snippets of my artwork with designs and text in Photoshop.

I thought this would be a fun project for me, so I will have some unique cards for my Project Life scrapbook, plus I could add them to my Etsy shop for other people who scrapbook or art journal.  These could be used in Smashbooks, art journals, Project Life or other scrapbooks.

They are available for instant download at my Etsy shop!  Only $3 for 12 different designs.. and you can print them off as many times as you want.
