Extreme Page Makeover!

This first page was one I drew while in a long car ride. I was just sketching little characters and coloring. After it was finished, I decided I did not like it. too cutesy.. tthe characters just looked kind of boring, and the page looked too chaotic. So I did an extreme page makeover.
BEFORE

I painted over much of the picture with white paint and added an image printed on tissue paper.  I added some pink spray ink as well.  Messy, but I like it a bit better now.

working on 'old' pages and making over the ones I don't like is something I had to learn and took me a long time before I dared to do that... I discovered it always gets better and your page proves it again. I LOVE your 'makeover' page!! Gorgeous!

Interesting and inspiring to see how completely one might move away from something that's not working and on to something that does. I'm curious about the image -- is this original with you or is it something you "grabbed" online or elsewhere?

Does it have to be original in order to use it? Or if not to use it, to publish it? Or sell it?

I look forward to printing on tissue paper:)

Marit, thank you! I've been starting to do this more. If you're not happy with something, you can't really make it worse by reworking it!

Jane, This image was one that I photocopied (on my photocopier printer) from a book of copyright-free images (from Dover). I assume that I can use these images for publication or to sell, but I have not really researched it too much as I wasn't planning on selling the artwork! I know you can find copy-right free images online that you can print out and use, but you have to read the terms.

I hardly dare say it out loud, but I loved the first page. It reminded me of a children's book illustration, so playful. Don't get me wrong, I like the new page too, but I'm a little sad for the old one. ;-)

Caatje, that is great! I can always draw these little guys again.

Marcia;
I have not tried printing on tissue paper. Can you give me some tips? I love the translucent quality you achieve but I am afraid of the mechanics...did you use a photo transfer process? Feed it through a copier? As an art teacher I may want to try something with this technique with my students...

Andrea, I literally just cut a piece of white gift tissue paper to an 8.5 x 11" size and just fed it through my computer printer. It's a little touchy and not every print turns out perfectly, but generally they work pretty well! It would probably get caught up in a regular photocopier. My printer is an old scanner/copier/printer 3 in 1.

Thanks Marcia! I have discovered that our new copiers at school do not use toner so do not work using some photo transfer techniques. I am going to experiment with the tissue paper here at home...thanks for the inspiration!
