Stencil Craft Book Tour and Giveaway!

 Peot_authorphotoStencil Craft Cover

Today I am part of a book blog tour for Stencil Craft: Techniques for Fashion, Art and Home, written by Margaret Peot.  I am also excited to be a part of TWO GIVEAWAYS for this book.  I will be giving away one copy of the book to a reader of my blog.  Simply leave a comment on this post to enter.  Tell me how you use stencils in your art.  There is also a second giveaway to winner a fabulous prize package.  All of the blogs on this blog hop are participating, so there will be one grand winner from the rafflecopter giveaway.  The form is at the bottom of this blog post.

Stencil Craft is a lovely book with many tips and techniques for creating stencil prints on tote bags, clothing, stationery, pillows and more.  I love these cupcake designs!  This might be fun for students in a middle school class to try.

There are several demonstrations about how to create stenciled artworks with layering.

These multi-layered, unique artworks are my favorite, called "amalgams" (I learned a new word!).  It was really interesting, because I had JUST written a blog post about using spray inks with leaves and then I opened this book and saw her demonstrating this technique.  I swear I didn't copy it! :)

One thing I like about the book is that she shows you how to cut your own stencils to create one-of-a-kind artworks.  This skull design is perfect for tying in with Day of the Dead.

So, what do you think?  Do you like using stencils in your artworks?  Have you ever cut your own stencils?  To learn more about this book, visit these sites:

I haven't used stencils much in my K-5 classroom... I have done a little silkscreening with the 6-8 kids using stencils.... I would LOVE to get this book, I just added it to my classroom book wishlist on amazon! I do a lot of simple relief printing with my little guys! Stencils would be really cool to add!

I haven't used stencils I with my k-8 students, but I think it would be an excellent technique to teach positive and negative space. It may also encourage hesitant students to take a risk to create something with immediate success.

I use stencils all the time to add detail in the background of my paintings and journal pages. I would like to cut more of my own. I have several of Ms. Peot's other books and they are wonderful so I'm sure this one is fabulous as well. Thank you for reviewing this book and for hosting this giveaway.

I love to use stencils in my art journaling. This book looks fantastic - I love the amalgam ideas especially. It seems like you could make some great canvases using that idea. Thanks for the opportunity to win!

I've used stenciling techniques to have my students create landscapes and simple shape designs in my art room. In my home I have stenciled designs in several of the rooms in my house and on my stairs. :)

Looks like a great book! I use stencils in my classroom as part of a faux printmaking lesson. We use embroidery hoops and cheese cloth with stencils in order to do a kind of screen print. I'd love to learn more ways to apply stencils!

I use stencils occasionally with different grade levels. Most are stencils that I create. But, this book looks amazing and I am sure it will give me more ideas to incorporate more!! :)

Oh, this reminds me I need to include stenciling in my art lessons more often. Thank you for introducing me to Margaret. I'd almost forgotten what fun stenciling can be and it is such a great technique to use with kids. Fun, foolproof, and it lets them experiment with paints, shading, pattern without having to recreate each shape themselves.
So, wondering...do you have any great sources for ready-made stencils? I love Julie Fei-Fan Balzer's stencils through Crafter's Workshop and the huge selection at The Stencil Lady, but always looking for more ideas! Maybe another post could elaborate on what's needed to make your own stencils? Thanks!
