Art Journal Pages in My Small Moleskine Journal

Like many art journalers, I have grown to love the Moleskine journals.  I was hesitant to try them because of all the hype (kind of like how everyone raved about the Copic markers), but with the Moleskine journals, even though they are a little more expensive, they are perfect for paint and marker.  There was virtually no bleed through with the watercolor paper and the papers do not buckle under wet media.  So, now I am hooked!  By the way, the Copic markers are good too, but I probably won't be spending the extra money on those.

These pages were made in the smaller journal, the size is 5.25"x 8.25", even though it is labeled as a "large" journal, the size of the book is definitely not large.

I'm not entirely happy with these pages, but they were fun to play around with.  The end result is kind of chaotic.

I wrote in an earlier blog post about how I was reading Blogging for Creatives.  I wanted to give you my honest opinion of the book, because I had such high hopes for the book.

  • I would recommend this book to the beginner blogger.  There was way too much really basic stuff in the book.  There was one section that answers the question, "What is a blog?".  I kind of think that if you don't know what a blog is or have never seen one, maybe you should wait to start your own blog!  Other sections were things like setting up your blog, "how to add a gadget", blogging on your phone, etiquette and so forth.  Good reminders, but not lots of new information to me.
  • There are some good ideas for blog posts and plug-ins.
  • I would like to see a Blogging for Creatives: BEYOND THE BASICS book!  I would like that.
  • The book called Problogger was more informative, but not geared for creative bloggers.
Speaking of blogs, Natalie Mutrux has a new website with a beautiful new look and name,
Genuine Major.  Check it out!

Lego Brickworld Convention- 2013, Part Three

At the beginning of the summer we went to the Lego Brickworld Convention and saw some awesome things built with Legos.  I wrote two other posts about the convention.  I had written up a draft about this convention and forgot to post this one.

Lego Brickworld Convention 2013, Part One
Lego Brickworld Convention 2013, Part Two

I love this idea of putting little Legos inside a Christmas ornament.  I'm not sure what is inside these, but I love the concept.

More amazing city scenes.
Guitars and anime mosaic

My favorite exhibit in the whole place was this adorable Lego viking ship.  Watch the video to see it!

Best wishes, Marcia

Project Life Pages

Besides art journaling and painting, I love to keep a scrapbook of family photos.  I haven't taken pictures of all of the pages, but here are a few from my 2013 album.

I like to use the Becky Higgins photo pages from the Project Life series.

Art Journaling with Limited Supplies: another Sticky Journal post

When we went to Michigan last week, I brought a small kit of art supplies.  In the kit was a medium size plastic envelope with a handful of painted papers, collage elements, stickers and tape.

I also brought a small box with glue, scissors, and a few pens and markers.  I tried to keep the art supplies to a minimum and really force myself to create something from just the small selection of materials I brought.  We used up almost all of the paper and collage elements I brought!

My mom surprised the kids with more stickers, stampers and a packet of markers, so we had a variety of materials to work with.

Some of the pages in my art journal were pre-prepped with spray inks and a little bit of paint.

Sticky elements used in this collage:
  • homemade sticker with quote
  • pink polka dot tape
  • giraffe sticker

Here is another page I made:

And here are a few pics from our vacation!
Hiking in Indiana
Playing on the beach in Michigan

Picking peaches in an orchard
The kids watching the dune buggy ride
The rides were fast!
Family pic at the dunes (Andrew, Daria and I are the three on the right side)
We roasted Smores, but Daria just wanted to eat plain marshmallows
I hope you enjoyed my post reliving my vacation trip!

Art Journaling with my Family

We went to Saugatuck, Michigan last week (bet you didn't know that, because I pre-scheduled blog posts for that time.  You really should be careful what information you give out when you are leaving town. You don't want to come back to a ransacked house!)  Anyways, we were gone for about 5 days and went to the Indiana Dunes and stayed in a cabin in Saugatuck.  We went with my brothers, nieces/nephews and my parents.

We had a blast riding the dune buggy rides, playing at the beach and going shopping in the cute shops.

One afternoon, I brought out my art journaling supplies for my daughter and niece to play with.

Some of the supplies we used were:
My niece is going into 1st grade and here are some of her awesome pages.  She was very prolific in the few hours we were making art.

My daughter enjoyed just cutting paper into lots of pieces

If you want to learn more about art journaling with kids, I wrote a little E-Zine!

Next post, I will be showing you some of the pages I made on vacation.

Sticky Journals Guest Post: Ana Polari

This Sticky Journals Guest Post comes from Ana Polari.
She titles her post "Bunny Vomit".  I LOVE what she has done, but then again I love cute and colorful things.  ha ha.  I'm glad this challenge forced you to step out of your comfort zone, Ana, and I love what you have done... especially using the sticker as a silhouette to trace.

Here's Ana:

My sticker postcards:

Even though I follow a lot of blogs and always like to leave a comment on someone else's post, I've never been interested in joining challenges or group projects. For challenges you usually have to make a number of art pieces or write posts on your blog on certain days. I guess this works for many people, it keeps them inspired and motivated. I, however, could never join these challenges because I'd feel too much pressure and so I'd create things I don't like just to beat the deadline.
But this time I decided to make an exception.

One of my guilty pleasures are stickers. I love them! So I was very excited when Marcia Becket invited me to be a guest artist for the Sticky Journals challenge on her blog, Art & Inspiration. She sent packs of stickers to several artists and now shares what they created with them on her blog. Here's a peek of what I got:

Personally I could never use stickers on my books and journals for two reasons. One, I feel that a sticker on one of my pages would make it less mine. And two, stickers are very cute, and I don't want what I do to be cute. Lots of glitter, baby animals, colors and words like 'happiness' and 'hope'...it's just not my style. So instead of making a book I chose to make some postcards, because mail art allows me to experiment and step outside of what I consider to be my style.

This is the first postcard I made. I tried different sticker combinations before I got this idea. The golden frame is that part of the sicker sheet that you usually throw away. The curious thing is that I made this postcard first and then I thought of making its 'sister' using the original circles.

When I finished these two postcards I went back to the sticker pack and searched for something that made me feel inspired among all those cutesy animals and colors. I chose a kitty with a ribbon on its tail.

I copied the silhouette and created a kitty mosaic which I painted using watercolour pencils. This is the result:

Finally, after a long struggle with the stickers' cute and joyful influence, I just let go and made this bunny postcard. It hurts a little to look at it, and while I was making it I had to stop for a moment to write on my notebook: 'color headache flash insomnia'. So I guess I like this postcard and at the same time it makes me want to vomit. Cute and color overload! If it were a page on one of my books it'd be in the trash by now. But it's a postcard so I like it, and I'm glad I chose this format.

This challenge was harder than I thought it'd be. But it was fun and gave me some unexpected results, so I'm gonna keep all the stickers I didn't use and I'll take them out whenever I want to take a step out of my comfort zone again.
